Ravanica Monastery (Monastery of Vrdnik)

Ravanica in Vrdnik is the only monastery on Fruška Gora situated within a settlement, probably built in the 16th century.

The monastery was built in honour of and devoted to the Ascension of Christ by the members of the monastic order that found shelter here - the name Ravanica also comes from them. The late-medieval stone church with transept had a wooden bell tower. Formerly, the relics of the Serbian knez Lazar were hidden in the tower, which were later moved to the cathedral of Belgrade and then to the Monastery of Ravanica. This is one of the most beautiful of the 18 monasteries in the mountain, today the home of monks and nuns. During World War II, the building was not damaged, however too many valuable art pieces were stolen from the monastery's treasury. Later these were recovered and placed in the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade. Nearby are the monasteries of Jazak and Mala Remeta as well. If you are heading from Ravanica to Ruma, the fabulous Pavlovac Lake is only 8 km away and Lake Borkovac is a few kilometres farther.
